My sweet friend, and former photographer, Jax, reached out to me to photograph for an inquiry she received. Kenny is from Florida, and planned a trip to San Diego, just to propose to his long-time girlfriend MJ! He read that Sunset Cliffs was a really popular and romantic proposal spot, and after seeing a pulled back shot on the cliffs that Jax had taken, he knew it would be just perfect!
Kenny and MJ met at a restaurant. Not on a date or anything. Just two people eating at a restaurant, who spotted each other, and in that moment decided they had to be together! Seven years later, they have a beautiful son, and even work together in their thriving Real Estate business in Tampa! I’ve always found that couples who work well together professionally have a leg up on the rest of us.
Kenny wanted this proposal to be really special, and a complete surprise! However, we had quite a time coming up with a “story” to throw MJ off. She knew Kenny was going to propose, she just didn’t know when. I’m sure when he told her:
1. “We’re going sightseeing, so get dressed up”
2. “Ask your brother (who’s a local here) to come along to watch our son”
3. “Oh yea, we’re taking this limo”
her suspicions were more than peaked!
But MJ was a great sport, and if she had any inclination that a proposal was coming, she sure didn’t realize it… even when she saw the photographer (me) snapping photos as soon as they stepped out of the limo!
Kenny worked with event planner, Amy, of Events by Lift , to create a beautiful Cliffside picnic! Amy decorated in neutral and teal tones to reflect the beautiful hues of the water. She even provided custom made champagne flutes, champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and a custom “Will You Marry Me?” sign! It was so perfect!!
While everything worked out mostly perfectly, the weather didn’t cooperate! We’d had gorgeous, sunny, warm Southern California weather all week, but of course, the one day someone from out of town wanted sunshine, he got rain! Luckily for us, the clouds held on to most of the downpour until we were finished. The cold wind was tolerable, and the dark clouds made the color of the water gorgeous! The drizzle of rain was barely noticeable amid the excitement and joy of the proposal! When Kenny got down on his knee, all of the tourists on the cliffs fell silent. Of course MJ said, “Yes!” and it was followed by a roar of cheers and applause from everyone! How wonderful to have complete strangers celebrate your love!
It was such a fun event, and I’m so grateful for Kenny and MJ for allowing me to be a part of it! Congratulations you two!
